In our time and age this is no longer true. You can record anywhere!
Not only mix but also record! And you will produce professional results if you know how to do it.
After the revolution of affordable digital audio workstations that brought studio gear to every homestudio we are now facing the next revolution:
Mobile recording through digital audio workstations for mobile devices like GarageBand, Cubasis and others. Combined with mobile interfaces it became possible to connect professional large diaphragm microphones to iPads and even iPhones. Virtual guitar amps have become better and better and you can now connect your travel guitar to your iPad with an instrument cable to record it anywhere. On the beach. In your car. On the train. Even on a flight. Purists might object, but you can decide if an amp in the basement with spiders sometimes joining you is more inspiring than a VST on the beach. I made my decision. And if I want a real amp I put it in the roofdeck of my house, crank it up and record it there. Fresh air rules, does it not? Did you know that cars are often better vocal booths than small basement rooms?
A lot of homerecorded vocals that I received for mixing could have better been recorded outside with just an iPad and its internal microphone than a vocal recorded in a bad room, no matter what expensive microphone and preamp had been used. The room made them honky. Sad to say that a cheap iPad mic would have done a better job outside on a day that was not windy.
